Abstract
This thesis explores the viability of Rorty's description of a liberal ironist, based on the concepts used or referred to by Rorty, especially those in the first three chapters of his book Contingency, irony, and solidarity. The basis of language, as an expression for the existence of a person, tapping especially the power of creative imagination through redescription of events, shows how change can occur through language contingently, historically, and these changes are often encapsulated via vocabularies. To complement and enrich Rorty's description, the contributions of Donald Davidson, Sigmund Freud, and Frederick Nietzsche to Rorty's description of the liberal ironist are then explored further. Using the analysis of a few examples, the existence of liberal ironists is justified, contextualised, and explored, with the help of Davidson, Freud, and Nietzsche, and leads to some indications as to what it means to be a liberal ironist in different contexts, without a prejudice of one form of existence over another, given that self-expression is a private matter. This suggests the need to always explore to find the best description or vocabulary that is most useful for one's present context, such that even the conception of the liberal ironist is open to redescription.
