Abstract

This article traces how motifs in Simeon’s oracle (Luke 2:29–35) develop toward Paul’s meeting with Jewish listeners in Rome (Acts 28:17–31). It sorts the connections into three kinds: lexical continuity, narrative mediation, and functional analogy. This article observes the texts synchronically, attending to narrative composition, and compares Lk 4:16–30; 7:29–30; Acts 13:43–48; and Acts 28:17–31. The verb ἀντιλέγω forms a lexical sequence: Jesus as a sign spoken against (Lk 2:34), Jewish listeners contradicting Paul (Acts 13:45), and the movement associated with Jesus spoken against everywhere (Acts 28:22). Acts 13:47 carries the role of light for the nations from Jesus to his witnesses. Other links work only as functional analogies, such as divided responses and the language of hearts. The Spirit moves Simeon to speak (Lk 2:25–27), while in Rome the Spirit speaks through Isaiah in Paul’s citation (Acts 28:25). Mary’s sword has no explicit counterpart in Rome. The evidence supports cumulative thematic resonance, though it falls short of a formal inclusio or exhaustive fulfillment. Acts 28:24 keeps Jewish responses divided, and Acts closes on Paul’s continuing proclamation. His story in Rome brings selected motifs to a narrative culmination and leaves the fate of Israel as a whole open. Keywords: Simeon, oracle, divided response, antilegõ, narrative mediation
