Abstract

Serat Kalatidha is a literary work by R. Ng. Ronggawarsita, regarded as the last great Javanese poet, and is renowned for its depiction of the jaman édan (the age of madness). This study conducts a philosophical hermeneutic analysis of Serat Kalatidha through the lens of worldview (Weltanschauung). The author argues that, by applying Wilhelm Dilthey’s theory of worldview, Serat Kalatidha can be understood not merely as a literary work but also as a philosophical reflection. In addition to portraying the crisis experienced by the Surakarta Palace, Serat Kalatidha can be interpreted as Ronggawarsita’s critical expression of the experiences and circumstances he faced. Through the constituent elements of worldview—worldview as a representation of reality (Weltbild), evaluation of life (Lebenswürdigung), and principles of conduct in life (Lebensführung)—Serat Kalatidha reveals the distinctive way in which Ronggawarsita reflects on his life. Serat Kalatidha can be regarded as a philosophy of life (Lebensphilosophie), as it reveals reflections on meaning and value arising from the poet’s lived experience and personal struggles in confronting the challenges of of his lifetime. Keywords: Serat Kalatidha, jaman édan, worldview, philosophy of life, Weltbild, Lebenswürdigung, Lebensführung
