Abstract

This paper examines Hannah Arendt’s The Life of the Mindwith a focus on the activity of thinking as a constituent of the life of the mind. Thinking is understood as an inner dialogue structured as a ‘two-in-one’, which examines and dissolves whatever is held as un-questioned certainty. The discussion highlights the tension inherent in thinking between withdrawal from the world of appearances and its relation to the common world, as well as the importance of distin-guishing meaning from truth in order to understand thinking as an activity. Arendt’s reß ections show that the absence of thinking makes possible the occurrence of evil acts without evil intent. Yet the ethical and political signiÞ cance of thinking does not lie in the formation of moral norms or policies, since thinking yields neither. Rather, it gives rise to conscience as a by-product, enabling resistance in the face of evil and atrocity. Through the example of the 1945 atomic bomb project, the paper indicates that the capacity to know and to create—which en-dows human beings with a sense of power—has developed far beyond the ability to comprehend the meaning of one’s actions and to imagine their consequences for the common world. In this light, thinking may be understood as a mode of existence that unfolds as an ongoing en-gagement with the common world, seeking meaning amidst its painful disorder, while sustaining the clarity of conscience. Keywords: thinking, willing, judgment, appearance, common world, metaphor, truth, meaning.
