Abstract
Our democracy seems, at least for the moment, firmly estalished. But challenges remain in a more indirect way. On the one hand, the morass of corruption, money politics and cheap opportunism we witness in our political elite turns many young people away from any idealistic comitment. Over time this can lead to a silent errosion of our democraty. Challenges come, on the other hand, from religious fundamentalism which does not recognize the value of our national state. But the most dangerous people there are not outspoken fundamentalists which anyhow constitute only a small minority. The real danger comes from narrow-mindedness and dull suspicion of pluralism and free thinking still endemic in parts of the people.
