Abstract
This paper wants to show how the Javanese, the biggest ethnic group among the Indonesians, encounter the Gospel. In the first part, after an introduction into the Indonesian-Javanese religious landscape, the two seemingly contradictory ways Javanese experience the Divine is developed: the Divine as numinous, powerful ground of their existence, to be reached by turning to one's own inner depths, and the Divine as caring, protecting, saving presence. Especially important is Javanese stress on "feeling" the truth of religious teaching. In the second part, first, the typical Javanese religious tolerance is explained, then some subcutaneous relationships between this Javanese religiosity and Christian-Catholic teaching are pointed out, and thirdly it is shown that the attractivity of the gospel does lie not only in the fulfillment it promises, but also in the call to conversion and to a new life. Javanese will feel at home in a Christian-Catholic community if discretion, freedom and distance are respected.
