Abstract
The task of the dissertation director is made easier when the doctoral candidate knows well the theme of the dissertation and is equipped with the ability of analyzing the original text. We can say with a Chinese proverb, "shifu lin jin men, xiu xing zai ge ren," which means "teacher accompanies until the door, further study is in the student." This dissertation opens many new perspectives to understand the teaching of Confucius deeply. It is commonly accepted that ren, yi and li are three main concept of Confucius's teaching and among those three notions ren is the core of his teaching. By analyzing the character of de (virtue) the author discovers that the root of Confucius' main notions is human heart. The place where Heaven and man encountered. It shows that the teaching of Confucius has a very deep metaphysical view, as well as broad spiritual outlook. Another interesting aspect of Confucius teaching is that he believes that through self-cultivation, zi xiu, human being is able to nurture his good nature in its highest excellence. The diagram in this dissertation has shown us an "organic cosmology" or "anthropology correlative" it denotes the continuum relations between matter and spirit, between self and others, between Heaven and human being, and historical sensibility. Those four correlations are what Chen-Chieh Huang stated as "harmonia mundi" It is evident that Confucius most precious contribution is not only moral teaching, but he opens a new vision of man. One other important aspect of this study is that Confucianism contains a profound eastern spirituality, which is very valuable contribution to our world today. In this era of globalization, if we will enrich our humanity, intercultural dialog is a sine-qua-non-condition. And the encounter between many different cultures requires three different things, spirit of tolerance, the ability of making dialogue, and cosmopolitan point of view. Besides that, it also obliges "inter-cultural competence" which is the capacity for catching the characteristics of different cultures and synthesizing them into a new culture. Globalization urges two basic attitudes, namely, openness and creativity. One of the responsibilities of our education is to develop that inter-cultural competence. That is also the characteristic of today's humanism. This research can serve as a bridge to foster that inter-cultural dialogue. [Preface by Prof.Dr. M. Sastrapratedja, STF Driyarkara]
